Taxes and Accounts Insights

Which year a premium is reported, how assignment changes holding periods, and what brokerage transfers and protection limits do to open options.

The tax and account treatment of an option trade is often decided by a detail the trade ticket does not show: which shares were sold, which year a premium is reported, whether the contract is a Section 1256 option, or which account holds the cash.

The tax articles show how a December put premium can become a January tax event, how a qualified covered call can pause a stock holding-period clock, and why an open index option can create a year-end gain. A replacement call raises a wash-sale question. A covered-call premium does not complete an IRA required minimum distribution, and a short-put premium does not add contribution room.

The account articles cover brokerage transfers with open options, approval levels and trusted-contact designations. They also cover protection limits. Bank deposit insurance counts direct and swept deposits at one bank, while SIPC treats two accounts held in the same capacity at one broker as sharing one limit. The pieces cite IRS publications and regulator guidance, use US examples and are not tax advice.
